Born in 1830 in Saint-Thomas des Antilles, Camille Pissarro arrived in Paris at a very young age. Gifted in drawing, he decided to devote himself to painting from 1855. It was in 1863 that he exhibited for the first time at the "Salon des Refusés". In his late works, Pissarro would give metropolitan views an interest previously shown only by Monet and Caillebotte. He rented rooms in Paris, Rouen, Dieppe and Le Havre, from which he painted dynamic perspectives of boulevards, squares, rivers and bridges. In February 1897, Pissarro took a room at the Grand Hôtel de Russie, in order to produce a series of paintings of the Boulevard Montmartre at different times of the day. This painting is the only night scene in this series. It is kept at the National Gallery in London.
