This painting vividly illustrates Monet's discovery of the Mediterranean region during his stay in Italy in 1884.
It was nevertheless executed in the studio in Giverny. With this canvas, Monet wanted to create a large decorative panel for Berthe Morisot's salon. This work reflects the Mediterranean luminosity and the painter's fascination with the nature of this region. The painting is representative of various aspects of Monet's art. He finds the large, almost square format there. The repetition in the studio of a motif studied on site in Bordighera announces the approach adopted later for the "series". Finally, with this exotic landscape, Monet offers us a variation on one of his favorite themes: that of the garden.
