A chinoiserie is a decorative European art object from the 17th and 18th centuries whose aesthetics mirror Asian art. It evokes the attraction of collecting for objects from the Far East. It reflects a taste for a dreamed Far East, its imagery and symbols, in asymmetrical forms, as in patterns. East Asian art is seen and read as a model of singularities, which is admired, collected, copied, adapted but also hybridized. By extension, the word chinoiserie will designate the trinkets or art objects that come from China or that are in the real or fantasy taste. The term was used in 1836, under the pen of Balzac to designate decorative objects from China "which forge the aesthetics of the chimerical, the fantastic, the exotic, the renewal of a baroque or rococo style which accompany romanticism".
