The White Mulberry (Morus alba L.), Common Mulberry, Mulberry (English) or Morera blanca (Spanish), is a species of Mulberry, fruit trees of the Moraceae family. Native to China, the White Mulberry was widely cultivated for its leaves, the exclusive food of the silkworm.
The White Mulberry has been cultivated since ancient times from China to the Near East, its expansion in the Mediterranean basin around the 8th century is linked to sericulture. A few plants of this mulberry tree were transported to France under Charles VII, its cultivation began under Charles IX but developed especially under the impetus of Henri IV with Olivier de Serres who introduced the first subject in 1601 to the Tuileries garden and claims to have planted 15,000 to 20,000 feet at the end of this garden. It was then widely distributed in all the subtropical and temperate regions of the world.
