Of Spanish origin, Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949) was a painter, photographer, scenographer and interior decorator. He worked mainly in Italy and achieved his greatest fame thanks to his Art Nouveau textile creations, such as finely pleated silk dresses and his refined scarves in shiny silk and velvet.
Inseparable from his work on clothing, his research into textile printing techniques led him to create a very personal repertoire, focusing on patterns (Renaissance, Coptic, Byzantine, Arabic, Persian, Japanese or Chinese) as well as dyeing, with natural colours often giving the fabrics used an aged appearance.
This collection of silk muslins was printed by our house for the Fortuny Museum in Venice (Palazzo Pesaro Orfei), where Mariano Fortuny had a workshop at the end of the 19th century and lived from 1902.
