"The Wanderer Contemplating a Sea of Clouds" also titled "The Wanderer above the Sea of Clouds" or "The Man Contemplating a Sea of Mist" is a painting by the German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774 - 1840). Considered the most significant and influential artist of German Romantic painting of the 19th century , when Romanticism extended to other artistic expressions such as literature, philosophy and music, he was particularly inspired by the symbolism of winter as well as by the magnificent immensity of the sea. Influenced by Goethe, the artist suggests in this sublime and majestic landscape a deep feeling of communion with nature, while the man contemplates the mystery of the world that extends at his feet. The landscape depicted is inspired by the Elbe sandstone massif. It was composed from 1818 and is, with "The Sea of Ice", one of the painter's most famous works. It is held by the Kunsthalle Hamburg.
