Scarf edition of a fragment of the 1953 Makemono
In 1953, a prolific collaboration began between Joseph Brochier (2nd generation of a family of silk workers from Lyon) and Aimé Maeght, one of the greatest collectors and gallery owners of modern art in France. The genesis of this strong artistic bond is represented by Miró's Makemono. Every year since then, the Maeght Foundation has published a limited edition of a drawing by an artist exhibited during the year.
ON THE ORIGINAL EDITION (Christie's 2010 notice):
Silk print (415 x 10000 mm). Rolled, color print of an original watercolor by Joan Miró made in the workshops of Aimé Maeght on a silk from the Brochier silkmakers in Lyon. Rosewood case by Antoine Brac de la Perrière (unsigned), with the artist's name in multicolor marquetry, with the key. Provenance: Jean Brochier. Limited edition of 50 copies, this one not for sale and unsigned. A luxury publication and a great technical feat (the roll is in fact 10 meters long) whose challenge was taken up by the Lyon silkmaker Jean Brochier. The result with its bright colors on a very high quality fabric speaks for itself. Personal copy of Jean Brochier to which is attached an autograph letter signed by Joan Miró (on his letterhead) written during the production of Makemono. "All your technicians have understood and grasped very well the spirit in which it was necessary to work. Please be so kind as to keep me informed of all the new results that you obtain."
