William Morris (24 March 1834 – 3 October 1896) was a British manufacturer, textile designer, printer, writer, poet, lecturer, painter, draughtsman and architect, famous for his literary works, his libertarian political commitment, his publishing work and his creations in the field of decorative arts, as a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which are among the sources of the Arts & Crafts movement which had, in this field, one of the most important influences in Great Britain in the 20th century.
Morris's love of the medieval herbariums of foliage, leaves and other fragrant herbs that he observed during his nature walks is reflected in his remarkable work as a tapestry maker.
