A leading figure in decorative art of the 1920s, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann (1879-1933) was above all a furniture designer.
The critic René Chavanne wrote: "He was in love with pure, slender, finely rhythmic forms, he lovingly, almost sensually savored these precious materials that he harmonized on the exterior, as well as the interior of his furniture." He is less often recognized for his work as a wallpaper and textile designer, although not insignificant. He uses rare species such as rosewood from India and Brazil, Macassar ebony from Indonesia, amaranth from Guyana or mahogany from Cuba. He veneers his furniture with Burmese Amboine burl, ivory marquetry, and sheaths them with leather, shagreen and crocodile skin. Around 1929, he introduced chrome metal and silver into his productions.
