The first half of the 19th century was characterized by the industrial revolution, which many believe was due to the rise of metallurgy. The industrial revolution brought about an economic upheaval, of course, but it was probably above all a revolution in materials. An engineer specializing in the construction of metal frames and suspension bridges, Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923) was one of those who knew how to combine the professions of engineer with that of architect, taking advantage of the new advantages offered by iron .
In 1884, Eiffel proposed a project for a tall tower designed as a large lattice pylon for the 1889 Paris World's Fair to demonstrate France's industrial power. The tower was built on January 28, 1887. After being the target of much controversy and protest, the Tower was erected for the 1889 Paris World's Fair. A major attraction at the fair, it remains the most visited monument in France today.
