"Starry Night" is one of the best-known works by Van Gogh (1853-1890). It marks a decisive turning point towards greater freedom in his art. The painter's colours and lines then reach the height of their expressive power. We note the use of complementary colours: blue-orange, yellow-violet, colours that reinforce their respective luminosity. This play on the luminous intensity of darkness is a total novelty for the time. Eleven yellow stars like balls of fire accompany the growing moon, illuminating the night sky, blue and fluid. The painting represents what Van Gogh could see from the room he occupied in the asylum of the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in May 1889. Often presented as his masterpiece, the painting has been kept at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York since 1941.
