Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) was a Scottish architect and designer, the leading representative of Art Nouveau in Scotland. Mackintosh designed hand-made fabrics for architectural projects in Glasgow. "Rose and Teardrop" is one of these textile pattern projects. Mackintosh attached more importance to the symbol than to the aesthetics of the rose itself, which appears as a voluptuous woman, representative of Art Nouveau: round and sensual (curves, round appearance, warm colors) but also dangerous and tortured (thorns and dark background). In 1988 designer David Austin created the "Mackintosh rose" in a color varying from lilac to soft lilac pink and a scent of old rose with aspects of lilac and almond blossom.
