As early as 1887, Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) already had his personal touch, a synthesis of impressionism and pointillism. Sunflowers is the name given to three series of paintings (7 canvases) made in 1887 and 1889. The first was executed during his stay in Paris in 1887, with sunflowers placed on a table. The second includes six canvases made during his stay in Arles in August 1888 (four paintings) and in January 1889 (two copies that he called the Rehearsals); it represents bouquets of sunflowers in vases.
A "seventh" canvas of the subject, of controversial attribution, is also attributed to him. It is partly with Gauguin, for whom he painted several versions of sunflowers, and under the Arlesian light, that Van Gogh works with color in all its fullness.
