Caspar David Friedrich is considered the most significant and influential artist of 19th-century German Romantic painting, when Romanticism extended to other artistic expressions such as literature, philosophy, and music.
He was particularly inspired by the magnificent vastness of the sea. This 1819 painting, with its vibrant, warm colours, which seem to involve the viewer in the journey, shows a couple holding hands, sitting at the prow of the boat and looking out at the city as it emerges through the mist. It is held by the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg.
