Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) was indeed a poet whose passion for art led him very early to experiment with other forms of creation, including drawing, theatre and cinema. Beyond his literary work, he left behind a prolific body of painted and drawn work, many examples of which can be found in the Alpes-Maritimes and at Cap d'Ail, on the border of the Principality of Monaco. Ceramics also left their mark on Cocteau's work. His main sources of inspiration were mythology, dreams and eroticism. From 1957 to 1963, Jean Cocteau created nearly 350 ceramics, which he compared to tattoos on the skin, and jewellery in the studio of Madeleine Jolly and Philippe Madeline in Villefranche-sur-Mer. "Pottery saved my life!" It saves me from using ink, which has become too dangerous because everything we write is systematically distorted by those who read it."
