Katsushika Hokusai is the most famous Japanese artist in the world, a painter, ukiyo-e (woodblock print) designer and printmaker. His work influenced many European artists, particularly Gauguin, Van Gogh and Claude Monet. He is sometimes considered the father of manga, a word he invented that roughly means "spontaneous sketch".
The changing aspect of the liquid element has always fascinated Katsushika Hokusai. Through this representation of a wave mixing several shades of blue and lighter shades corresponding to the foam, he captures a moment that will remain frozen forever. The viewer's gaze is engulfed in the intimacy of this breaking wave, whose darker tones evoke an infinite depth. Undeniably feminine, the general shape, rather ovoid and enveloping, forms a protective cocoon, like the procreative matrix.
