The daughter of German printers and illustrators, Anna Maria Sybilla Merian (1647-1717) was introduced to painting and drawing at a very young age. Talented from her teenage years, she devoted her work to the observation of insects, particularly the metamorphosis of butterflies. At the time, one of the goals was to find species that would replace the silkworm. In 1699 she went to Suriname, located on the northern coast of South America. The trip offered Merian a unique opportunity to explore new species of insects and plants. In 1705, Merian published "Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium" ("The Metamorphosis of the Insects of Suriname") which included some sixty engravings, one of the first illustrated accounts of the natural history of Suriname.
