Between 1901 and 1904, when Picasso had just moved to Paris, he used cool colors to paint some of his best-known paintings. During this period, known as the Blue Period, Picasso's works addressed harsh themes such as death, old age, and poverty. Picasso painted figures on the fringes of society in sad tones. The intimacy given to the paintings by the blue monochrome and Picasso's personal touch transformed the social causes that the artist painted into much more personal scenes. This painting is held by the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge.
