A symbol of immortality and resurrection, bees were chosen by Napoleon in order to link the new dynasty to the origins of France. Indeed, golden bees (in reality cicadas) had been discovered in 1653 in Tournai in the tomb of Childeric I, founder in 457 of the Merovingian dynasty and father of Clovis. They are considered the oldest emblem of the sovereigns of France. The hive is a model of absolute monarchy and the bee the symbol of a hard-working, prosperous and monarchical community as much for Ancient Egypt as for the Merovingian dynasty. Napoleon I therefore chose this motif to replace the royalist fleur-de-lis. The bee thus became an omnipresent ornament, from carpets to the coronation mantle.
