While the famous seahorse or “dragon-tailed Pegasus” has been an integral part of the logo since its creation, it has undergone multiple mutations.
The "Shrimp", as it is affectionately nicknamed, has been the symbol of Air France since its creation in 1934. The legend tells you
It seems that the famous aviator Maurice Noguès remembered his long observation of seahorses in the Mediterranean after a forced landing (October 1927 Naples), when it came time to choose an emblem for Air Orient: this seahorse is made up of the head of Pegasus and the tail of the dragon of Annam symbolizing power and flight in the air. The seahorse recalls the marine environment in which seaplanes evolve. Emblem taken from its predecessor Air Orient, the logo adopts the national colors as does the name of the company from 1976.
The current logo features for the first time "AirFrance" as a single word. The historic tricolor band disappears in favor of a single red band. Only the empennage and fuselage of the planes retain the national colors.
