Chinese calligraphy is not only useful in daily life, but it also constitutes, along with traditional Chinese painting, the heart of the history of Chinese art. This beginning of the text of the Ts'ien-Tseu-Wen or "Book of a Thousand Words" was calligraphed by the Chinese painter Tcheou Hing-ts'eu, commissioned by the Emperor Kao-tsou between 507 and 521. A collection of a thousand different words arranged in verses of four words, it relates the history of China in a thousand characters. For more than one thousand two hundred years, it has continued to be in China the first elementary book to be placed in the hands of all children, and which serves them as much to learn to read as to write.
