In Polynesia, from 1891 to 1893 and then from 1895 to 1903, Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) represented an unknown, peaceful, mysterious but probably also utopian culture. He painted in bright colors vahinés with flowery pareos in natural landscapes
"Women of Tahiti" is an oil on canvas made in 1891. Currently held by the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, this painting depicts two Tahitian women on a beach. The artist first donated the painting to Captain Arnaud (Tahiti) who bequeathed it to his daughter. She kept the painting until 1920. From 1920 to 1923, Women of Tahiti was part of the collection of Viscount Guy de Cholet. In 1923, the State accepted the painting as a donation to the National Museums.
