“Gules, a silver lion, with a chief azure charged with three gold fleurs-de-lys,” reads the coat of arms of the City of Lyon.
The first signs of the Lyon lion date back to 1320.
In 1809 Napoleon replaced the fleurs-de-lis with bees.
In 1815 under Louis XVIII a sword appeared in the lion's right paw.
In 1830 the fleurs-de-lis were replaced by stars, but a few years later Napoleon III brought back the bees.
At the beginning of 1900 the city decided to revert to the original coat of arms.
