The Bayeux Tapestry, also known as the Bayeux Embroidery or Queen Matilda Tapestry, is an 11th-century embroidery that has been listed in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register since 2007. Made with a needle on linen canvas, embroidered with four different stitches of wool threads in ten natural shades, it features 626 figures, 202 horses and mules, 560 animals including 55 dogs, 37 fortresses and buildings, 41 ships and small boats, and countless other very diverse objects. It describes events ranging from the end of the reign of King Edward the Confessor of England in 1064 to the Battle of Hastings in 1066, the stakes of which were the throne of England, contested from Harold Godwinson by William, Duke of Normandy.
