Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), a promoter of the Vienna Secession, designed a mosaic frieze for the dining room of the Stoclet Palace in Brussels, a spacious mansion with formal gardens. Its content is open to a wide variety of interpretations, but the spiral ornaments are said to evoke the tree of life or, according to Christian iconography, the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden. The panels depict a swirling tree of life, a standing female figure, and an embracing couple. The motifs are decorated with a variety of luxurious materials, including marble, ceramic, gilded tiles, and enamel, as well as pearls and other semi-precious stones.
