One of the most discussed and controversial paintings in the world, "Spring" is an allegorical painting by Sandro Botticelli (1445–1510), executed in tempera on wood panel between 1478 and 1482, during the Early Renaissance. The painting depicts a group of figures from classical mythology in a garden, but no story has been found to bring this particular group together. The scene appears to be lit from the front, as evidenced by the lightness of the clothing. This light produces a sense of depth between the trees in the background. There are 500 plant species identified in the painting, with approximately 190 different flowers, of which at least 130 can be specifically identified. The overall appearance and size of the painting are similar to those of the Flemish millefleur tapestries, popular decorations for palaces at the time. Since 1919, the painting has been part of the collections of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, along with "The Birth of Venus".
