Marie Antoinette of Austria (1755-1793) was Archduchess of Austria, Imperial Princess, Princess Royal of Hungary and Bohemia, Dauphine of France, Queen of France and Navarre and wife of Louis XVI, King of France. A controversial figure, Marie Antoinette was above all a liberated woman who lived in an era that was perhaps not her own.
Kept away from any political ambition, she imposed herself above all by supporting the arts of her time. The kingdom's leading patron, she encouraged the development of a style that is today associated with her name. Her monogram is composed of the two letters M and A intertwined in a single character. It can be found, among other places, on the banister of the staircase in the vestibule of the Petit Trianon, in the gilded cabinet of the Palace of Versailles, on the porcelain service of the queen's travel kit.
