Mireille Porte, known as Orlan, a pseudonym she writes "ORLAN" in capital letters, is a French transmedia and feminist visual artist, born on May 30, 1947 in Saint-Étienne. She lives and works between Paris, New York and Los Angeles. She is an artist who expresses herself through different media: painting, sculpture, installations, performance, photography, digital images, biotechnologies. She is one of the French body art artists best known to the general public in France and abroad. Her works often maintain a complex dialogue with fashion.

"In each of my surgical operations, everything relied on a great designer: Paco Rabanne, Issey Miyake, Franck Sorbier… There I moved on to the act of styling by creating silhouette drawings for each of the body-sculptures. These clothes have the particularity of being entirely black on one side and multi-colored on the other. I had a silk velvet made and printed by the Brochier establishments, the greatest silk manufacturers in Lyon: the fabric that we designed together is similar to the inside of the body, lots of colors but also words, words alienated by the body, the body alienated by words. The pattern is also punctuated with medical imagery. The links between art and science fascinate me."
