Blanquita Suarez (1894-1983) was a popular comic singer who gave many performances in the theatres of Barcelona at the time. Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was able to meet her when she performed in the theatres and cabarets of Barcelona that he frequented at the time. Blanquita's sketches are kept at the Picasso Museum in Paris and her oil painting from 1917 is kept at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. In this work, the intense colours and the arrangement of geometric shapes are typical of Picasso's Cubist works around 1915. The rigorous composition combines technical severity with the grace and spontaneity of a suspended movement.
