Picasso moved to Cannes in 1955 to a baroque-style villa: La Californie. In this superb residence with its fin-de-siècle ornamentation, the wrought iron balconies overlooking the sea regularly welcomed pigeons. The artist was particularly fond of these birds, and they would be the subject of many paintings.
Despite minimal lines and details, one is immediately transported to a calming seascape, bordered by a collection of comfortable local pigeons, where whites and blues dominate. This highly decorative Pigeon Workshop is part of a series of 9 canvases that Picasso executed between September 6 and 14, 1957 (Picasso Museum, Barcelona).
