French painter born in Ukraine in 1885, Sonia Delaunay devoted her work to abstract art.
Sarah Stern - known as Sonia Terk - was born in 1885 into a modest Jewish family near Odessa, Ukraine, and was raised in Russia by her uncle, who came from a much more affluent background. The young Ukrainian received a classical Russian education and was passionate about the art of European museums, which she visited from a very young age.
It is difficult to describe her as she experimented with her plastic research in multiple fields from the 1910s onwards. With Robert Delaunay, the artist couple embarked on simultaneity - a luminous path that she would pursue and reinvent alone after her husband's death.
Sonia is convinced that, in order to renew itself, the art of her time must abolish the hierarchy between minor and major arts. Thus, the designer very early on extended her plastic research into the field of interior decoration and fashion. Like Nathalia Goncharova or Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Sonia Delaunay became at the same time a figure of female painter and decorative artist.
