MoMaurice Denis is a French Nabi painter, decorator, engraver and art historian. His painting "La Colonie de Vacances" (1913) refers to Trégastel, a small seaside resort in Brittany.
In this painting, the painter shows us the sea, the sailboats, a decorative treatment of the reflection of light on the water - typical elements of the Nabis school. The long dark dresses of the three nuns and their pointed headdresses stand out from the sea on one side and from the group of children dressed in pink on the other. Here Denis emphasizes the evocation of a joyful celebration in an anticipatory atmosphere against a very picturesque background: play of light on the sails, the sea and the headdresses.
