Picasso created this work at the Grimaldi castle in Antibes where he was invited to stay for two months. This painting is characteristic of his post-war years when Picasso returned to the Côte d'Azur. It was a happy period in his life and work. He explored the great Mediterranean mythological themes (nymphs, fauns, etc.) while he devoted himself to ceramics in the pottery workshops of Vallauris.
