“Flower Garden” by Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) showcases the floral Impressionist style that the artist explored through his series of garden pieces, including “Garden with Crucifix” (1911) and “Garden with Sunflowers” (1913). The style used by the artist pays homage to the artist’s love of design and pattern, based on the composition of flowers. The artist is best known for his Byzantine mosaic paintings. However, Klimt slowly transitioned his work after the Golden Period into the Impressionist movement, studying the work of Van Gogh and exploring the technique of flattening landscapes and forms. Exhibited at Sotheby’s Impressionist, Modern and Surrealist Art sale in London in 2017, it was the third highest price for a Klimt work sold at auction in Europe and the world record for a landscape by the artist: $56.9 million.
