BILINGUAL POSTER FRENCH / ENGLISH
Mulberry leaves (Genus Morus, family Moraceae) are the only food of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, the caterpillar of a small moth, raised in China for nearly 5000 years to produce noble silk thread, which represents less than 0.1%* of the textile fibers produced in the world. In a continental climate like France, the mulberry tree produces leaves from May to November. From December to April, Bombyx eggs are kept cold at 4°C.
* 140,000 tonnes per year, polyester alone represents 55,000,000 tonnes per year or 52% of the world production of textile fibres
1 standard 90x90 cm silk square represents a minimum of 60g of uncrushed silk
= 400 caterpillars
= 400 cocoons
= 400 km of silk thread
= 20 kg of leaves
= 2 to 3 mulberry trees
